In this way the elements were linked, while being so visually different. I didn’t feel that the work was complete as a stand-alone feature and so I added an element with contrasting surface but from the same material. This project was no different, using plaster for the first time allowed me to work by touch and create the finish of the central element by hand. Texture has always been something which has fascinated me and influenced my creation. From there I started to experiment with shape in both wood and cardboard, and here is where I found the basis for my artwork. My initial development of this sculpture started when I was inspired by the urban environment which I could see out of my studio window, in particular, the geometric roof of De Montfort’s surgery. This sculpture, titled ‘caged’, has been made from wood and plaster, which form two juxtaposing forms of different textures. In my work I have been exploring the relationship between the mind and the spaces, physical and mental, in which we inhabit.
